BEAUTIFUL

LGBTQ youth groups exploring themes of identity, safety and equality, along with concepts of courage, performance, beauty and acceptance.

You alright mate?

You alright mate?

It represents that we are unique individuals who should reach out to each other. We should unite as we are all the same on this Earth.

Safe

Safe

Metro, this is our safe space. Hidden and shrouded in mystery it overlooks a world that is not always safe. In here we are protected from discrimination and not made to feel different.

Are you sure you can’t see me?

Are you sure you can’t see me?

This image appears to stand out and as people we see it as a threat and a cause for consideration to behave. But the words occur to be damaged and old symbolising how we are tired of being reminded that our every move is being noted and how we may be forced to perform in a way we might not want to. Let's be realistic, you can't always see me, and to be honest, it's better this way.

Imperfect reflection, mirror

Imperfect reflection, mirror

This photograph primarily shows a sketch portrait drawing done offhandedly by one of my personal heroes, Edd Gould, shortly before his passing. As it depicts myself circa 2012 I thought it would be appropriate to include a self-portrait with the image somehow, hence the reflection.

Front Woolwich

Front Woolwich

This photograph shows the setting in front of the Equitable house in Woolwich, where my LGBT group holds meetings, and some of the people there that day. Among the crowd are some people I know personally, preparing to take a photo. I selected this one because I like the staging compared with many of the others, and because it showed how people I know can make up part of a crowd.

The Bridge

The Bridge

This is a representation of how we are surrounded by old and decaying structures. It's almost like a nod back to how it was once useful.

Hello my old friend

Hello my old friend

This is a representation of my past. As it has been with me on all my adventures and place I've visited. It shows how important this ring is to me.

A bike left unattended

A bike left unattended

This photograph shows a bike that was left unattended for some time during the photo shoot. There was some anxiety expressed about using the equipment we were using in public in this area, and this seemed to mirror that - mostly because I would not personally leave my bike there for any considerable amount of time.

Lock

Lock

What are the actions we take to keep not only ourselves safe but also the people we love? There is strength in feeling secure. The bonds we make with each other strengthen us and become the foundations of our support system.

Mask

Mask

Our face can often be a mask used to guard our thoughts and emotions. The expressions we make are used to protect ourselves both physically and mentally. What lies behind this smile? How is it perceived and read? Do you know how she truly feels or is it her projection of how she wants to be perceived? Sometimes what we use to keep ourselves safe is displayed on our faces.
